The Louisville women’s soccer team continued its impressive start to the season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Evansville on Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. With this win, Louisville (4-0-2) has already matched its total number of wins from the 2023 season and remains unbeaten through the first six games of 2024.

The Cardinals’ offensive prowess was on full display, with three goals that pushed their season total to 17 goals in just six games, surpassing last year’s total of 15 goals in 18 games. This victory marked Louisville’s fourth multi-goal game of the season, matching last season’s output.

Mackenzie Geigle led the charge with her first career brace, scoring a goal in each half, bringing her season tally to four goals—tied for the team lead. Karsyn Cherry, who also has four goals this season, opened the scoring with her first career assist on Geigle’s initial goal and added a goal of her own later in the first half. Cherry set a career high with three points on the night. Brooke Dardano, who entered the game tied for the national lead in assists with five, provided her sixth assist on Cherry’s goal.

The Cardinals struck early, with Geigle opening the scoring in the 11th minute. Cherry delivered a precise pass to Geigle just outside the box, and after a deft first touch, Geigle fired a shot inside the near post to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.

Louisville doubled its advantage in the 37th minute when Dardano’s corner kick found Cherry at the edge of the six-yard box. Cherry’s header beat the goalkeeper at the far post, making it the second consecutive game in which Cherry scored from a Dardano corner kick. Notably, all four of Cherry’s goals this season have come from corner kicks.

The Cardinals led 2-0 at halftime, having completely shut down Evansville’s offense, not allowing a single shot. Louisville has yet to allow a shot in the first half of any of their four home games this season and has not conceded a shot on goal in the first half in all six games this year.

In the second half, Geigle secured her brace in the 59th minute. After Dardano’s initial shot struck the woodwork, Gianna Angelillo collected the rebound and sent a cross into the box. Geigle timed her run perfectly, beating the defender with a header to extend Louisville’s lead to 3-0.

This victory keeps Louisville’s momentum strong as they continue their unbeaten run, showing marked improvement from the previous season.
