When you spend 90 minutes constantly putting pressure on an opponent’s back line, eventually the levy breaks.
That was the story in Murray on Wednesday, as Western Kentucky turned a tight early contest into a commanding 4-1 victory over regional rival Murray State.
Early on, it looked like we might be in for a classic commonwealth back-and-forth battle. The Lady Toppers drew first blood just nine minutes in when Danielle Lewin found the back of the net off a delivery from Kora Kipley. But Murray State didn’t blink. Less than two minutes later, Breece Bass converted a penalty kick to knot things up at 1-1, giving the home crowd of 359 plenty to cheer about heading into halftime.
Then came the second half, and WKU simply took over the pitch.
The Toppers came out of the break with relentless offensive tempo. April McDonald broke the tie in the 48th minute off an assist from Georgia Liapis to put WKU up 2-1. From there, the wave of pressure never stopped. Sophia Lezizidis padded the lead in the 68th minute via a Maggie Bellair setup, and Rose Finnegan put the finishing touches on the victory just four minutes later, with Kipley picking up her second assist of the afternoon.

- Shot Differential: Western Kentucky outshot Murray State 19-3 (8-1 on goal).
- Corner Kicks: WKU racked up a staggering 15 corner kicks while holding the Racers to zero.
- Goalkeeping Carousel: The Lady Toppers kept Murray State so backpedaled that the Racers rotated three different goalkeepers—Griselda Revolorio, Isa De Santos Gomez, and Hannah Dike-Lawlor—to try and stem the tide.
For Murray State, it’s a tough home lesson in handling relentless pressure against a quality opponent. But for WKU, it’s a statement performance on the road—showing depth, second-half adjustments, and an attack that simply wouldn’t let up.
