Derek Cowherd, Associate Athletic Director at the University of Louisville, has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee for a four-year term ending on August 31, 2028.

As a member of the committee, Cowherd will play a crucial role in selecting the field and seeding teams for the NCAA Championships, administering the tournament, and addressing national issues within the sport. His responsibilities also include contributing to the development and implementation of rules aimed at advancing women’s lacrosse at the collegiate level.

“We’re excited to have Derek join the Division I Lacrosse Committee,” said UofL Lacrosse coach Scott Teeter. “His extensive experience and perspective as an administrator will be invaluable. Derek has been a key figure in our athletics program at Louisville, and I anticipate his knowledge and expertise will help us further enhance the sport.”

Cowherd, who serves as the athletic department’s Chief Inclusivity Officer, has been instrumental in developing and implementing inclusivity initiatives for UofL Athletics. His role also includes serving as the sport administrator for Women’s Lacrosse and Rowing. Prior to rejoining Louisville, Cowherd worked as a senior consultant at Third Eye Consulting Group, focusing on improving organizational culture through equity-minded and culturally-responsive leadership.

Before his consulting role, Cowherd held senior administrative positions at Ohio State and Ole Miss, where he achieved significant milestones in academic success for student-athletes. His career in athletic administration began at UofL, where he progressed from student-athlete to various administrative roles, including assistant director for academics in athletics.

“I am honored and excited to represent the ten Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse teams on the NCAA Lacrosse Committee,” Cowherd remarked. “I want to thank Commissioner Phillips for this opportunity to contribute to the leadership of Louisville Lacrosse and advance the sport at the collegiate level.”

Cowherd’s appointment underscores his commitment to enhancing collegiate athletics and promoting equity and inclusion within the sports community.
