The 24th-ranked University of Louisville men’s soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 2-0 win against Jacksonville on Thursday at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Josh Jones and Gage Guerra secured first-half goals for the Cardinals, while Harvey Sellers earned his first clean sheet in a Louisville uniform.

The match began with both teams cautiously feeling each other out, leading to just five shots in the first 30 minutes. However, Louisville quickly found its rhythm, scoring two goals in a 61-second span late in the first half.

Jones netted the first goal of the season for Louisville in the 39th minute, heading in a cross from Noah De Blasis to break the deadlock. Just one minute later, Sander Roed’s shot was deflected, landing at the feet of Guerra, who calmly slotted it into the net to double the lead.

Louisville’s defense held strong for the remainder of the match, allowing just eight shots, only two of which were on target. Sellers saved both attempts to secure a shutout in his debut for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals outshot Jacksonville 12-8 and had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Louisville will travel for its second match of the season, facing Tulsa next Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
