The University of Louisville women’s soccer team continued their strong start to the season with a 3-1 victory over UAB on Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals (2-0-0) secured their second win of the season with an early goal from Mackenzie Geigle and two additional goals in the second half. After just two games, the Cardinals have already scored 10 goals, compared to 15 goals in all of last season.

The match began quietly, with neither team recording a shot in the first 15 minutes. However, in the 27th minute, the Cardinals broke the deadlock. Karsyn Cherry and Molly Cochran set up Emma Kate Schroll, who delivered a cross to Geigle at the top of the box. Geigle took a skillful touch to get past the keeper and scored her second goal of the season, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead.

Louisville nearly extended their lead before halftime when Fina Davy capitalized on a turnover, but her shot sailed over the goal. The Cardinals dominated the first half, holding a 5-0 advantage in shots and preventing UAB from recording any shots for the second consecutive game.

The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 67th minute with another goal from a player who had scored in the season opener. Schroll sent a corner kick into the box, where Cherry headed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, with Schroll earning her second assist of the night.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the 80th minute when newcomer Gianna Angelillo made a run up the left side and sent a low cross into the six-yard box. Davy was quick to the ball and calmly finished it for her first collegiate goal.

UAB got on the scoreboard in the 81st minute with a penalty kick following a handball in the box. Despite the Blazers pressing forward in search of more goals, Louisville’s defense held strong to secure the win.

Goalkeeper Erynn Floyd picked up her second win of the season, facing minimal action. She did not see a shot in the first half for the second consecutive game and made the save on the only shot on goal she faced in the second half.

Louisville will conclude their three-game homestand on Thursday night when they welcome New Hampshire to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The women’s match will follow the men’s team’s season opener against Jacksonville at 5 p.m., and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
