The Eastern Kentucky University football team capped off its final tune-up before the 2024 season with a standout performance during the annual Colonel Fan Day, presented by Meijer, on Saturday night.

“It was a great time tonight,” head coach Walt Wells remarked. “We’re thankful for everyone in Colonel Nation who came out tonight to support us. It’s always special for us as a team to perform in front of them… we can’t wait to see them back here in a few weeks!”

The scrimmage kicked off with an offensive showcase, highlighted by quarterback Matt Morrissey launching a 45-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Johnson Jr. on just the second play. Morrissey continued to impress, connecting with freshman wideout Marcus Calwise Jr. on a 25-yard touchdown pass over the middle, with Calwise making a toe-dragging catch in the end zone. Telly McCallister added a two-point conversion with a run off the right side, extending the offensive momentum.

Cameron Hergott kept the energy high, delivering a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dequan Stanley. However, the defense quickly responded, as linebacker Kaden Smith intercepted a pass and returned it 43 yards for a pick-six, showcasing the team’s defensive prowess.

Hergott later found freshman T.J. Mitchell for another touchdown, adding to the evening’s offensive fireworks. The scrimmage concluded with running back Brady Hensley powering into the end zone from three yards out, sealing the final touchdown of the night.

With the scrimmage in the books, EKU now shifts its focus to the season opener on the road against Mississippi State on August 31.
