University of Louisville swimmer Ilia Sibirtsev took to the pool Monday morning for the preliminaries of the 800M freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Representing Uzbekistan, the Cardinal distance star clocked a time of 7:56.67, finishing fourth in his heat. Overall, Sibirtsev placed 22nd, with only the top eight swimmers advancing to the finals.
Sibirtsev’s performance at the Olympics follows an impressive collegiate season. He captured gold in the 500-yard freestyle and silver in the 1650 freestyle at the 2024 ACC Championships in Greensboro. Additionally, he earned All-American honors in the 1650 at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis.
Tomorrow promises to be a busy day for the Cardinals in Paris. Nicolas Albiero is set to compete in the 200 butterfly, while Denis Loktev (Israel) and Murilo Sartori (Brazil) will participate in the 4×200 freestyle relay. Denis Petrashov will also be in action, swimming the 200 breaststroke.
