Kentucky State Women’s Volleyball Drops Doubleheader to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods

Despite a hard-fought effort, Kentucky State women’s volleyball dropped both matches in Saturday’s doubleheader at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Match One
A kill by Jaicee Corcoran brought the Thorobreds within one of the 6-5 Pomeroy lead early in the first set, but the Pomeroys pulled ahead, taking the set 25-12. The second set was a closer contest, with Kentucky State falling just short in a 25-22 loss. In the third set, the Thorobreds rallied late, scoring back-to-back points and closing the gap to 24-22. However, a final kill by the Pomeroys secured their 3-0 match win.

On the stat sheet, Corcoran co-led the match with eight kills, while Amber Gregory topped the team with 12 assists. Timaia Sugars anchored the defense with two blocks. Corcoran also contributed eight points and eight digs, sharing the team-high in digs with Sugars, who recorded eight as well.

Match Two
The Thorobreds showed early promise in the second match, with an early kill by Leah Tubbs and a Pomeroy attack error giving Kentucky State a 5-3 lead. A kill from Corcoran and a service ace extended their advantage to 8-6, but Saint Mary-of-the-Woods narrowly claimed the set 25-23. The Pomeroys went on to win the second set 25-16 and completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

Corcoran co-led the match with two blocks, while also tallying three kills and five points. Gregory once again led the team in assists, finishing with 13.

The Thorobreds will head to Albany, Ga. for the SIAC East/West Crossover on Sept. 20-21, where they will face Savannah State at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
