Eastern Kentucky University senior libero Josie Schmitendorf has been honored as the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league from its Atlanta headquarters today.
Schmitendorf’s stellar performance came during three matches at the Boston College Invitational, where she averaged 4.20 digs and 1.0 assists per set, along with one service ace. The Huntley, Illinois native led EKU with 10 digs against Texas Tech, recorded a match-best 21 digs in the Colonels’ sweep of Iona, and added 11 digs against Boston College. Her efforts in the tournament moved her into 10th place on EKU’s all-time career digs list, now totaling 1,297.
After the first weekend of the volleyball season, Schmitendorf ranks second in the ASUN Conference for digs per set.
The Colonels are set to host the Geri Polvino Invitational (GPI) starting Friday at the Rick Erdmann Olympic Sports Training Center (OSTC). The invitational will feature six matches over two days. EKU will open the event against long-time rival Morehead State on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a match against Radford at 7 p.m. The Colonels will conclude the GPI on Saturday with a match against Youngstown State at 1:30 p.m.
