Gabriel Diallo, a former UK Men’s Tennis star from 2019-2022, concluded his remarkable run at the US Open with a tough loss to [14] Tommy Paul, falling 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the Third Round. This was only Diallo’s second appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam, but he made a significant impact, securing his first two career Grand Slam wins during the tournament.

Diallo began the match with impressive form, taking the opening set in a tiebreaker after a series of breaks of serve from both players. However, Paul, the American No. 14 seed, managed to secure an early break in the second set, which proved crucial. He carried that momentum into the third set, winning it comfortably and taking a two sets to one lead. Diallo fought back in the fourth set, initially breaking Paul’s serve twice and holding a 40-15 lead in the fourth game. Despite his efforts, Paul rallied to win the break and ultimately took the set in a tiebreaker, clinching the match.

Despite Saturday’s loss, Diallo enjoyed a career-defining week at the season’s final Grand Slam. Reaching the Round of 32 elevated him to No. 103 in the live ATP rankings, marking a potential new career high. He also earned $215,000 in prize money from the tournament.

Diallo will continue his 2024 season by representing Canada in the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage from September 10-15 in Manchester, England. Canada, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, will compete against Great Britain, Argentina, and Finland in a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the Davis Cup Finals. Diallo, who was part of Canada’s Davis Cup-winning team in 2022, will be making his fourth consecutive appearance for Canada.
