No. 8-seed Kentucky women’s soccer (11-4-4, 3-3-4) was edged out by No. 9-seed Tennessee (9-5-4, 3-4-3) in a narrow 1-0 defeat during the first round of the 2024 Southeastern Conference tournament on Sunday.
Despite a strong offensive showing, the Wildcats were unable to find the back of the net, outshooting the Volunteers 15-5 and registering five shots on target compared to Tennessee’s three. Kentucky’s pressure forced Tennessee into five saves and drew two yellow cards.
The game’s lone goal came early, with Tennessee’s Sammi Woods scoring in the 15th minute. Kentucky goalkeeper Marz Josephson made a critical penalty save in the 72nd minute to keep the Wildcats within reach, but the team couldn’t rally to equalize.
Kentucky now shifts its focus to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will learn their postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, November 11th, at 4 p.m. ET.
