Tyler Bell, a standout high school infielder from Illinois, has committed to the University of Kentucky, opting to join the Wildcats rather than signing a professional contract after being selected 66th overall in this month’s MLB Draft. Bell, who has already signed a National Letter of Intent with Kentucky, will be eligible for the draft again after the 2026 season.

“Tyler is an outstanding player and tremendous person,” said Kentucky head coach Nick Mingione. “He will perfectly fit into our culture both on and off the field. The Kentucky baseball program got better today.”

Bell hails from Frankfort, Illinois, and attended Lincoln-Way East High School, the same alma mater as UK Gold Glove winner Ryan Ritter. According to Perfect Game, he will be the third-highest-rated recruit to set foot on Kentucky’s campus, trailing only Alex Meyer and Ryan Hagenow. Perfect Game has him ranked 59th overall in the Class of 2024, while Prep Baseball Report ranks him even higher at 13th.

Ranked as the 81st overall prospect, collegiate or high school, by MLB.com, Bell showcased his skills at the MLB Draft Combine earlier this summer. His performance impressed scouts and analysts alike. Baseball America noted his strong showing, highlighting his “impressive defensive actions at shortstop” and his “loud few rounds of batting practice.” Bell, a switch-hitter, displayed a versatile batting stance, with a solid approach from both sides of the plate. From the right, he delivered sharp line drives up the middle, while from the left, he displayed power, homering multiple times to the pull side.

Defensively, Bell stood out with his athleticism and arm strength. He showcased his versatility with active footwork, reliable hands, and the ability to throw from various arm slots. His fielding skills were on full display, particularly on backhand plays and quick exchanges.

Kentucky is coming off a historic 2024 season, advancing to the College World Series for the first time. Bell’s arrival promises to add depth and talent to an already formidable Wildcats roster, as they look to build on their recent success and compete at the highest level.
