Six University of Kentucky women’s golfers have earned the prestigious title of 2023-24 Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars. The honored players are Cathryn Brown, Jensen Castle, Laney Frye, Brooke Oberparleiter, María Villanueva Aperribay, and Marissa Wenzler.

Academic and Athletic Achievements

Four of these athletes graduated with degrees in May: Castle, Frye, Villanueva Aperribay, and Wenzler. Meanwhile, Brown and Oberparleiter completed their freshman years. This impressive group significantly contributed to a 290.2 stroke average last season, the third-best in program history, and achieved four top-five finishes in 2023-24. Their efforts also helped the team reach the Southeastern Conference Championship Match Play Quarterfinals for the first time and secure the program’s 21st NCAA Regionals appearance.

Jensen Castle

Castle, who turned in a 73.2 stroke average and recorded two top-20 finishes last season, recently earned her master’s in marketing. She is now playing professionally on the EPSON Tour.

María Villanueva Aperribay

Villanueva Aperribay, with a 75.4 stroke average, earned her master’s in finance. She is competing professionally on the Santander Golf Tour.

Marissa Wenzler

Wenzler achieved a career-best 73.3 stroke average and three top-20 finishes in the 2023-24 season. She completed her master’s in kinesiology and health promotion and is also playing on the EPSON Tour.

Laney Frye

Frye posted a team-best and second-best in program history 71.0 stroke average, with five top-10 finishes. She earned her bachelor of business administration in management and is currently active on the amateur circuit, aiming to turn professional.

Cathryn Brown and Brooke Oberparleiter

Both freshmen, Brown and Oberparleiter, are pursuing degrees in kinesiology and plan to return for their sophomore seasons in 2024-25.

The recognition of these six athletes as WGCA All-American Scholars underscores their dedication to both academic and athletic excellence, setting a high standard for future Wildcats.
