Top-20 finishes from Jansen Preston and Jack Schoenberger highlighted the final day of action at American Dunes Golf Club, as Kentucky men’s golf wrapped up its season-opening event in ninth place at 28-over par. The Wildcats recorded their best round of the week, making 14 birdies on the day.
Coach’s Reflection
“I thought our guys showed a lot of fight and resilience this week,” said head coach Gator Todd. “The field was top-heavy with some of the best teams in the country. We got to see where we stand early in the season and know we have work to do. I’m proud of Jansen and Jack for stepping up and finishing top 20 against a great field.”
Preston and Schoenberger Lead the Way
Jansen Preston achieved a new collegiate best with a T15 finish, surpassing his previous top finish of T19 at last spring’s Mason Rudolph Championship. Preston’s final round included four birdies, and he finished at 5-over par. Jack Schoenberger, continuing his impressive form from last season at Belmont, tied for 18th. This marks his 15th consecutive top-20 finish in collegiate events.
Solid Performances from Petrie, Clutts, and Klutznick
Redshirt sophomore Solomon Petrie posted three consistent rounds of 3-over par 74, finishing tied for 34th. Freshman Gavin Clutts completed his first collegiate event tied for 42nd, while grad-transfer Jackson Klutznick contributed his first counting score as a Wildcat, finishing tied for 60th.
Tournament Recap and Next Event
Alabama won the team title with a score of 12-under par, and Alabama’s Dominic Clemons took home the individual victory. Reflecting on the event, Todd said, “This is one of the most unique events in college golf, and playing at American Dunes on 9/11 is something we will never forget.”
Kentucky will return to action at the Bearcat Invitational, held Sept. 16-17 at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
